Between
the cities of Seattle and Tacoma is the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden,
which has one of the largest and finest collections of Rhododendron species in
the world. Over 10,000 rhododendrons grow in a beautiful woodland setting
covering 22 acres. The flowering season in western Washington begins in
early January and continues through late July with the majority of species in
bloom from March to May. Complementing the rhododendrons are numerous
companion plantings of ferns, primroses, iris, heathers, maples, magnolias,
conifers, and many other exotic and unusual plants.
Plants may be purchased from the Rhododendron Species
Botanical Garden at the Plant Sales Pavilion or by mail. RSF publishes
yearly a plant catalog listing plants available for sale. Two annual
Plant Sales are held at the Garden featuring over 30 local vendors. The
spring sale is usually the first weekend in April and the fall sale is usually
the third Saturday in September. Check the RSF web site, http://www.rhodygarden.org,
for exact dates and additional plant sale information.
