Naming of cultivated plants as a means to identify individual clones or groups is practiced universally for all genera. Different plant societies and individuals have accepted the responsibility of serving as International Registration Authorities (IRA) for various genera. The Royal Horticultural Society serves as the IRA for genus Rhododendron, as well as for several other genera. The American Rhododendron Society assists the RHS by collecting and forwarding information on North American rhododendrons and azaleas.
