R. 'Golfer'

Elepidote Rhododendron: 'Golfer'

Flower pale purplish-pink with slight brown spotting, reverse striped darker, widely funnel-campanulate, wavy lobes, 2" across.  Dome-shaped trusses holds 13 flowers.  Blooms early midseason.  Leaves narrowly elliptic, apiculate apex, cuneate base, 3" long, margins slightly re-curved, glossy, retained 2-3 years.  Silver tomentum on new growth.  Likes mid-afternoon filtered shade.  Grows to a typical height of 2 ft. in 10 yrs.  Cold hardy to -10° F (-23° C).  Hybridized by Berg.

 
R. 'April Snow'

Lepidote Rhododendron: 'April Snow'

Flower yellowish white, openly funnel-shaped, double, 1½" across, petaloid stamens.  Held in ball-shaped, trusses of 12 flowers.  An early season bloomer.  Leaves oblong, acute apex, cuneate base, ¾" to 1½" long, rusty-green scaly indumentum.  Dense, upright, well-branched growth habit.  Grows to an approximate height of 3 ft. in 10 yrs.  Cold hardy to -20° F (-29° C).  Hybridized by Mezitt.

 
R. 'Martha Hitchcock'

Evergreen Azalea: 'Martha Hitchcock'

Flower white, with strong purplish-red edges and purplish red spotting, single, 3" across.  Young plants often produce strong reddish purple flowers.  Inflorescence holds 1-3 flowers.  Blooms midseason.  Leaves ¾" long, hairy, dark green.  Broad, open plant habit.  Grows to a typical height of 4 ft. in 10 yrs.  Hardy to -15°F (-26°C).  Hybridized by Morrison.

 
R. calendulaceum

Deciduous Azalea: R. calendulaceum

Flower various shades of orange, scarlet and yellow, funnel-shaped.  Sometimes slightly scented.  Inflorescence has 5-9 flowers.  Blooms late midseason to late.  Leaves ovate or obovate to elliptic, up to 3½" long, deciduous.  Upright, spreading plant habit.  Grows to about 5 ft. tall in 10 years.  Hardy to -20°F (-29°C).  Native species found growing in Pennsylvania to northern Georgia.
