R. 'Night Music'

Elepidote Rhododendron: 'Night Music'

Flower inside moderate purplish red center blending to dark red at edges, with a dark red flare on upper dorsal lobe, outside base moderate purplish red blending to dark red at edges, with dark red mid ribs, broadly funnel-shaped, wavy lobes, 3⅓" across.  Ball-shaped truss holds 18 flowers.  Blooms midseason.  Leaves elliptic, broadly acute apex, rounded base, 4⅓" long, flat margins, semi-glossy moderate olive green, retained 2 years.  Typical height: 3 feet in 10 years.  Plant and bud hardy to 0°F (-18°C).  Hybridized by Barlup.

 
R. impeditum

Lepidote Rhododendron: R. impeditum

Flower violet or purple to rose-lavender, rarely white, broadly funnel shaped, about 1" across.  Truss has up to 4 flowers.  Blooms early midseason.  Leaves elliptic to ovate to oblong, up to ⅝" long, matte, mid green.  Dense, mounding dwarf shrub  Grows to a typical height of 1 ft. in 10 years.  Cold hardy to -15°F (-26°C).  Native to China in Northern Yunnan and South Western Sichuan.

 
R. 'Mount Seven Star'

Evergreen Azalea: 'Mount Seven Star'

Flower strong red with inconspicuous purplish spotting on some lobes, widely funnel-shaped, wavy lobes, 2¼" across.  Inflorescence 1-2 flowered.  Blooms late to very late.  Leaves elliptic, acute apex, cuneate base, ½" long, glossy, hairy above and below, light green.  New growth bright green with reddish hairy edges.  Prostrate habit, forms a circular mat.  Grows to a typical height of 1 ft. in 10 years.  Cold hardy to 0°F (-18°C).  Collected in the wild by Kuo.  Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.

 
R. calendulaceum

Deciduous Azalea: R. calendulaceum

Flower has shades of orange, scarlet and yellow, funnel shaped.  Sometimes slightly scented.  Truss has 5-9 flowers.  Blooms late midseason to late.  Leaves ovate or obovate to elliptic, up to 3½" long, deciduous.  Grows as an upright, spreading plant.  Reaches a typical height of 5 ft. in 10 years.  Insect and disease resistant.  Plant and bud hardy to -20°F (-29°C).  Species found in the wild growing from Pennsylvania to northern Georgia.
