R. 'Mrs E.C. Stirling'

Elepidote Rhododendron: 'Mrs E.C. Stirling'

Flower mauve pink with a paler center, unmarked, widely funnel-shaped, wavy lobed, about 3½" across.  Flowers age to white.  Conical-shaped truss holds about 17 flowers.  Blooms midseason to late midseason.  Leaves medium-sized, dark green.  Growth habit upright and leggy when young, later spreading and open.  Grows to a typical height of about 6 ft. in 10 years.  Cold hardy to -5°F (-21°C).  Hybridized by J. Waterer.

 
R. 'California Gold'

Lepidote Rhododendron: 'California Gold'

Flower greenish yellow with occasional pink markings on reverse, tubular funnel-shaped, wavy lobes, 3¼" across, fragrant.  Held in lax truss of 5 to 6 flowers.  Early bloomer.  Leaves elliptic, apiculate apex, rounded base, 3½" long, deeply indented primary veins, dark green, retained for 2 years.  Grows to a typical height of 3 ft. in 10 years.  Requires a temperate growing location; hardy to 15°F (-9°C).  Hybridized by Bowman.

Evergreen Azalea: 'Phoeniceum'

Flower vivid purplish red, with darker dorsal spotting, widely funnel-shaped, 2¾" across.  Inflorescence 2-3 flowered.  Leaves elliptic, acute apex, cuneate base, light green.  Grows to an approximate height of 8 ft. in 10 years.  Cold hardy to 15°F (-9°C).  Probably originated in Japan, later introduced to England from Canton, China.  Named by G. Don.

 
R. 'Mrs Betty Oliver'

Deciduous Azalea: 'Mrs Betty Oliver'

Flower pink with deeper pink veins, orange blotch on dorsal lobe, openly funnel-shaped, wavy edges, 3" across, very fragrant.  Ball-shaped truss holds 14 flowers.  Blooms early midseason.  Leaves oblanceolate, acute apex, cuneate base, 4" long, glossy, bright green, deciduous.  Upright habit.  Grows to a height of about 6 ft. in 10 years.  Plant is cold hardy to 10°F (-12°C).  Hybridized by Edwards.
